In 2017 we had the pleasure of being hosted by Grizedale Arts and the Coniston Institute, a community run village hall in the heart of Coniston with a history as a Mechanics Institute; and now an annex to Grizedale Arts. 12 emerging artists were nominated to take part by partners from all over the country, including ACAVA (London), C-Art/Eden Arts (Cumbria), East Street Arts (Leeds), Grizedale Arts (Cumbria), Islington Mill (Manchester) & The Newbridge Project (Newcastle).

Over 7 days the participating artists lived and worked together, responding to the unique site of The Coniston Institute, with its rich history in the Arts & Crafts movement, and home to both The Ruskin Museum and an annex of Grizedale Arts. During the week artists joined the local community in events, such as Village Lunch, and there were local tours and access to The Ruskin Museum collection. We also had a ‘Pecha Kucha’ style evening of talks by arts initiatives working in rural Cumbria, including Octopus Collective, Florence Arts Centre and the Florence Paintmakers, Littoral Arts Trust and The Li Yuan-Chia Foundation; accompanied by dinner by Village Table. The week culminated in a public open day, with an exhibition of art work by participating artists created over the residency, drop-in artist-led workshops, performances and artist film screenings (curated by Alex Culshaw).
