Doremi2016

WebDoremi2016 was hosted by Florence Arts Centre, a creative hub in a disused haematite mine in Egremont, West Cumbria.

17 emerging artists were nominated to take part by partners from all over the country, including ACAVA (London), C-Art/Eden Arts (Cumbria), East Street Arts (Leeds), Islington Mill (Manchester), The Newbridge Project (Newcastle) & Linsey Young (Curator, Tate Britain & Director of The Young Team).

Over the week artists live and worked together, responding to the unique site of Florence Arts Centre, with its rich industrial history set against the backdrop of the Lake District Fells. Artists learnt paint-making with the Florence Paintmakers, using the orangey-red iron deposits particular to the Egremont Area, and had access to the video/sound recording provided by Florence Arts Centre. In exchange there was be artist-led workshops for regular users of Florence Arts Centre throughout the week and an open-access residency during the centre’s usual opening hours, providing members of the public with an opportunity to observe the working processes of the participating artists. The residency culminated in an public exhibition, accompanied by a programme of artist-led walking tours, performances, artist film screenings and artist critiques.
